Last Minute Day &/or Overnight Trips in Southern Cali

LA is a mecca of fun in itself, but sometimes it’s good to step outside of the city buzz, traffic, work reminders, etc, and discover one of the incredible spots that are only a one to three hour car (or ferry) ride, but feel more like a plane ride away.

Catalina Island is a ferry ride away, and a step into a quieter way of life. You can’t bring your car here — visitors get around via bikes and golf carts — and you can choose to stay in the town of Avalon, or opt for true nature with a camping adventure.

Idyllwild, a couple of hours drive from LA, is an artistic community in the San Jacinto Mountains surrounded by nature, with miles of hiking trails and rock faces. Their 25th anniversary Jazz in the Pines festival takes place Aug 10th-12th, with over two dozen jazz, blues and R&B bands, in a breathtaking setting.

If you head north up the coast, you’ll hit Santa Ynez Valley, with six unique communities to explore. Solvang is an entire town devoted to it’s Danish founders, and you’ll feel like you arrived in Copenhagen. Santa Ynez is an old cowboy town with plenty of horse riding and bike trails with an old town feel. Los Olivos declares “Every weekend is a Wine Fest.”
After getting your fill of one or more of these towns, head 35 miles to the beach in Santa Barbara before heading home.
