ART IN THE COMMUNITY

Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center @ Inglewood

Development in Inglewood is happening at a rapid pace. This time it’s the turn of the arts with the construction of the new home of the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA). Earlier this week, the LA Philharmonic unveiled the architectural designs of the Gehry Partners for the Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center @ Inglewood.

Gehry’s $14.5 million design will transform the former branch office of the Security Pacific Bank at 101 South La Brea Avenue, in the civic center of Inglewood. It will be the first permanent purpose-built facility for YOLA and will be the third venue for the LA Phil along with the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.

The Beckmen YOLA Center will host rehearsals, classes and performances, and also serve as the focal point of the LA Phil’s commitment to community engagement in the area. The performance space will have a capacity of up to 260 people and will be able to convert into two smaller multi-purpose rehearsal areas. The facility will also include a choir room, an ensemble room, a small practice studio, office space, and a lounge for parents and family members. It will aim to serve 500 students from Inglewood and surrounding communities.

YOLA, founded in 2007, currently serves more than 1,200 students in South L.A., the Rampart District, Westlake/MacArthur Park, and East L.A., providing free, high-quality music training and academic support. Led by LA Phil music and artistic director Gustavo Dudamel, YOLA has become one of the most influential community-based music education after-school programs in the country.

Construction is expected to start this spring. We are excited about this new addition to the community and can’t wait to see how it turns out!
